Bringing
a Voice to the Voiceless Project
“Instead of shouting war cries to the
sky they (the Native Americans) were simply milling about, talking low,
mourning Marie. Would they ever come
down from Circle Hill, rampage the streets of Bentrock, looking for her killer,
taking revenge wherever they could find it?”
(Watson 102).
Who
will stand up for the innocent? Who will
bring justice to those who have no power to seek justice for themselves? Who will be the voice for the voiceless? These were the questions that plagued David’s
dream? These were Gail’s questions to
Wesley in Montana 1948. But these are not just questions for
Wesley. In our own world, there are
people who are powerless to stand up for themselves and who need someone to be
their voice to the world.
Essential Question:
Who are the powerless, the voiceless, or the oppressed
in our world today? Who are those
courageous individuals who are standing up for people who cannot stand up for
themselves? What can we do to make these
voices heard?
Task: Now that we
have discussed all of the articles, post on the blog and brainstorm examples
of other groups who are voiceless in our society or in other societies.
Look
through Upfront Magazine to help you
find other instances of marginalized people, those who are silenced by others
and/or people who are pushed to the edge of society by a dominant social group.
******After the break, we will
use this blog to come up with ideas for your research projects!******
Muslim Women- They are discriminated against in the work force because of what they wear. Ex: Abercrombie and Fitch discriminated against a job applicant because of her Muslim veil
ReplyDeleteAfrican Americans- Some people think they are being targeted by police and other radicalist with shootings and other propaganda ex: The Confederate flag and the push to get it removed from state capitals. Ever since nine African Americans have been shot and killed, they believe the push for slavery and hatred towards them is being reignited,
ReplyDeleteThe powerless people in the article, “Animals vs. Humans" of Upfront magazine, are the wild animals being killed by American trophy hunters. More than a million people of Zimbabwe signed a petition to stop issuing permits to hunt animals. What we can do to make these voices heard is to interpret the idea of some of these animals on the way to extinction and to ban hunting of animals like lions and elephants.
ReplyDelete21st Century Slavery- These are people who are tricked into working for little to no pay for up to 20 hours a day. They are from all over the world, they are tricked by being promised a better life and a good job with good pay.
ReplyDeletePeople aren't the only ones who are voiceless, wild life in Africa are being hunted by poachers as trophies. Foreigners can pay large sums of money to be taken out and given the chance to kill animals such as lions, and elephants. While some argue that regulated hunting is good for conservation, the fact is, it's illegal, and it's gotten out of hand. The number of elephants in Africa has been reduced from 5 million to 300,000. It's unnecessary in this day and age to regulate the wild life through hunting. Even if it is "helping" global conservation it's being done for the wrong reasons. While Africa has set rules for trophy hunters, they are hard to enforce. Africa has taken other actions such as tourist safaris, as well as creations of conservancies for the animals.
ReplyDeleteWomen in the Army- Some people do not want women to be able to fight in combat. Ex- Two women completed the Army Ranger training program and are now Rangers.
ReplyDeleteSlavery in 21st Century- Individuals who are promised a better job and life are being forced to work for little or nothing, this is even taking place in the United States. Ex: In Myanmar, Min Min was promised a job working on a boat, once on the boat he was forced to work for nothing. When he tried to escape he was beaten.
ReplyDeleteToday in the world today, undocumented immigrants don't get a voice in anything. Our immigration laws have been tearing apart families and not offering any sort of jobs that immigrants are looking for to keep themselves alive. 11 million, live in uncertainty and fear because they aren't given the right of law. The government doesn't see immigrants as citizens and therefore they don't feel as though they should be treated as if they are. Immigrants are coming from all over, like Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, China and Honduras, and thousands at a time, there really isn't a way to stop them, considering there are thousands of them craving the american dream.
ReplyDeleteAfrican American people do not have a voice, they have been suffering. #Blacklivesmatter is a hashtag that was created from the abuse and shot up for different and unnecessary reasons. Police Brutality is real, and it happens. People protest, but its still not enough. Instead of being voiceless people need to be heard. Its not just Black lives, But everyones lives matter. Its just in this time, its black people.
ReplyDeleteCubans: The people of Cuba have been migrating to the United States, due to the unfair lives they were living in Cuba. The government in Cuba does not provide enough for their people which had in effect, have driven people to get on boats and travel into the United States. In fact more that 25,000 people had traveled into the U.S. without visas and hundreds die on their travel to the U.S.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most voiceless are kumari goddesses from Nepal. These young girls become worshiped at a very young age by Hindu and Buddhist priests. Although these girls are treated like royalty, they are restricted by many rules. For example, these goddesses are not allowed to leave the house except for festivals. A kumari is retired only if the goddess has left their body, bleed for the first time or hit puberty. It's hard for a girl to live a normal life after becoming a goddess.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a group of people who are voiceless are students.Students never have a say in any matters. Teachers ignore students when they tell them they are assigning too much homework. Teachers also almost always have to be right, even when a student proves them wrong.
ReplyDeletei think that these days gun owners are being shut out by all the over the over the top conservatives who think that guns are the biggest threat to homeland security when the solid fact is that guns don’t kill people, if you leave a gun on a table and no one touches it it's not gonna get up on its own and start killing people and if it's unloaded the only way it can kill people is the same way a baseball bat could with blunt force the thing that most people don't consider is a knife could be much more dangerous, when you fire a gun you have the chance of missing your target if you use a knife you are already close enough to your target that you won’t miss you could get in a few good stabs or cuts before the target moves or is dead. plus if you’re gonna say that guns are the most dangerous weapons is like saying it's the only thing that can kill someone not to mention that there's the fact that a gun with no ammo isn't dangerous at all. so what people could do is give people a chance to speak give their argument rather than bombarding them with BS statistics they pulled out of their butt
ReplyDeleteAfrican Americans-they are voiceless and the public is finding more and more ways to prove this, such as the recent "crimes" that have been committed by african americans and when brought to court is handled completley differently than it would be if someone like a white person was put in the same situation.
ReplyDeleteAnother example of voiceless people is the Arab Spring in the Middle East. The Arab Spring is all the people who wish for democracy yet armed militias have taken over.In Syria the Arab Spring grew and gained support but it had created a vicious civil war leaving over 100,000 people dead while also creating a haven for Islamic extremists. In 2012 Egypt also neared democracy by having its first democratically elected president yet the Egyptian military removed him from office within the next year.
ReplyDeleteA good example of people who don't have a voice aren't even people. The wide variety of animals in Africa are being hunted by many people. The populations of many different species of animals has decreased sharply over the years. Africa however has made some laws to help conserve these animals but the rules aren't always followed.
